October is an interesting month. Just after the autumnal equinox, people in the Northern United States begin bringing out their jackets and boots and across the Western world, we become interested in pumpkins, spiced ales, soups and cider. The month begins with Libra and ends with Scorpio, and the season of remembrance…
This (Black) Calendar of Rest is a menu of optional ways to rest, things that can bring peace and joy and that require no preparation. I want the busy teachers, coaches, and Q4 CEOs to be able to participate in fall rest with us.
I have been thinking about this calendar for over a year.
I have found that knowing a day’s resonances can sometimes help to ground me when the world is spinning too fast.
I hope to give you information about the rest of the month before next Monday.
I did a lot of research to fill in this calendar, but I know there is so so much more. Feel free to message me and let me know what and who you would like to remember in October.
I spent over an hour gathering only the information for the 1st and 2nd. The internet is an abundant place. I decided to speed up the process by focusing in on music and literature as those are my personal interests. If it feels good, let me know by “buying me a coffee” that you are going to miss the athlete birthdays and you want me to go back and fill them in. Or you can buy me a coffee for any other reason, ha.
That National Day Website is a host unto itself (although in future, there are some things I want to double check and triple check), so I also only transferred over the days I found the most interesting. But let me know if you like my scripts for how to celebrate many different days all at once.
I am posting week one as a teaser for the entire month of October. I would greatly appreciate your support to spread the word about this project, purchase my books of poems, purchase a subscription here on Substack where I will write about the poetry and music I most love to read and listen to, or pre-order this digital calendar for the month (or through the end of the year).
High school teachers, maybe this could be your emergency substitute plans and your extension activities for students who always finish early. If I ever sub for you, I will be looking here first. I started looking at websites like the National Day Calendar originally in the seventh grade classroom, trying to add uniqueness to each day.
Thank you so much for this. I was literally just daydreaming about how I can really center rest in October bc I'm desperately need to slow against the pull of busyness. This is so so so great, and right on time.
This is AMAZING!! My educator soul is so happy - so many applications! My music-loving + fact-loving side loves the tidbits I glimpsed..."Youssou N'Dour"!!! (Just put on 'Please Wait' and cued up 'Birima'). As soon as I figure out the details I'm going to get this to the hands of the other educators I know who will value it. What a gem! This has truly been a treasure-finding Friday ✨ 🦋 ✨
